Tibetan Community Center Film Screening in Portland
By Lance Trumbull | April 28, 2008
Last Saturday we had a wonderful event - a charity screening in Portland, Oregon at the Tibetan Community Center. It was a well attended screening with a nice mixture of Tibetans, Nepalese, and Americans. Screening the film in a Tibetan place of worship was wonderful and hopefully our karma was enhanced more as we raised several hundred dollars for the education of my young Nepalese friend, Maya.
I met Maya while I was living in Kathmandu 6 years ago. The Everest Peace Project office was originally located in Thamel - a tourist and area in Kathmandu. I would see Maya almost everyday; she was a sweet, poor street kid who would always carry her brother on her back - she would often sell purses or beg for food from the tourists. We became friends and over the years, we have stayed in contact with Maya and her family and The Everest Peace Project did what we could to help her and her family with food and clothing. As Maya grew older and became a teenager, I became more worried about what she would grow into without a proper education and so last year we enrolled Maya into the Trishakti English Boarding School in Kathmandu - a very good school in the Kathmandu Valley. Maya recently finished near the top of her class and continues to excel in her education; we are very proud of her. I am in contact with Maya as she now emails me and will often instant message me with MSN messenger. My good friend Kiran, who lives in Nepal and who helped me find the school for Maya - also helps watch over her and makes sure that all money sent goes directly to her school and that Maya has books and clothing and is properly taken care of.
For those who want to donate to help further Maya’s education, please contact me direct (info@everestpeaceproject.org) - 100% of all donations specifically for Maya will go directly to her education.

You know, Lance, the more I read of everything you are doing, the more I am awed. Congratulations on a successful showing. I am sure Maya’s life has been and will be forever changed by your generosity. With all the bad in the world, it is people like you that keep us all going. Cheers-

Keep up this good work. We need to always provide opportunities for kids and other bright people. Thank you.
